My Piece

I know. Prepare yourself.

I don’t understand where the education system are being dictated- because that’s what it is- by someone who has never once given any indication that he has a true insight or understanding of the cogs in process within education. To fully equip yourself with the comprehension of how to improve the value and quality of a system, surely the first fundamental step is to develop your own knowledge of what that means?

People consider teachers to be martyrs. Just as it is time that Gove matched his claims and ideals with facts and experience, public understanding of this vocation needs to alter. Teachers are martyrs. To exist as a martyr is to suffer, to the point of death for your beliefs. Soun. A bit drastic? Stick with me…

I have worked 48 hours in three and a half days. I have worked twelve hours in school, marking 70 assessments, 40 pieces of class work, 20 project booklets, in addition to the planning and long term schemes that I am putting together from scratch. I have been called a bitch, a dickhead, and had a child suffer a head injury that resulted in hospitalisation this week. Do not tell me that I in it for the holidays. I will eat you alive (mainly because a food shop on this level of fatigue is out of the question).

Teachers are martyrs, because they endure beyond most people’s normal boundaries in a bid to do the best that they can with the time that they have. The last week before a holiday is one of the most stressful of the term; the first week back matches it in terms of urgency.

I am only six months into my career, but from discussions with teachers of all levels of experience, seniority and capability, this doesn’t change; the goalposts simply twitch about.

The consideration of children’s education should be faced by a team of individuals that have both the knowledge and experience to take on theatre responsibility; individuals that truly understand the concept of a balance between success and pedagogy.

So, as a fresh (ahem) faced body, walking into this world with new eyes, my first question would be this-

Sir David Nicholson: involvement within the NHS since the 80s

Sir Benard Hogan- Howe: within the police force since 1979

Since when did writing for a newspaper qualify you to have such a residing power over the future education of this country’s children? Who the hell is Michael Gove?
